Two tortoises have been successfully hatched at the University of Lincoln, UK.

Geoff and Ludwig are the latest additions to the family of Red-footed tortoises living at the University’s Riseholme Campus.

Dr Anna Wilkinson, from the School of Life Sciences, is excited about the arrival of the baby reptiles who will help her with future animal cognition research.

She said: “It is the first time we have successfully hatched tortoises which is a fantastic achievement and I am delighted to report both Geoff, who was born on 13th December, and Ludwig, who arrived on 17th December, are doing very well. We’ll be keeping a close eye on them over the next few weeks.”

Once fully grown Red-footed tortoises generally reach 30 centimetres (12 inches) in length and can weigh up to 30 pounds. They can live up to 50 years.
